Our Journey
At the Fourth World, our story begins with a passion for ethical fashion. All of our textiles are either recycled, or they are created from fabrics sourced from small farms and weaving collectives, creating a platform for fair trade practices that uplift communities and preserve traditional craftsmanship. All of our garments are then dyed with extracts made from local plants and sewn on the beautiful coast of Maine.

About Me
My name is Deborah Freedman and I am the Chief Creator and Alchemist at The Fourth World. During the summer of 2018 I began experimenting with making natural dye extracts from the plants in my garden. I then tested the dyes that I created on white clothing that had been discarded due to staining or yellowing. What resulted was a magical transformation that gave the garments a new life. After some sewing experimentation, I began to design and sew a few items of clothing made from organic and hand woven cloth that I sourced from small farms and weaving cooperatives. I now have a collection of both recycled clothing, and new clothing designed and sewn by me that is dyed with my natural plant dyes, earth pigments, and rust. My textiles are all made using traditional methods, by hand and with love and attention, giving each piece it's own unique energy and meaning.
Dyeing With Botanicals
Dyeing with botanicals is a slow and meditative process. I use local plants, flowers, and homemade extracts to make my dyes. I work with all types of wools, silks, linens, and cottons to make hand dyed and hand felted textiles. I like to add recycled fibers to my work such as cottons and silks from vintage saris and kimonos.
